The Texas-based burger chain Whataburger has officially filed permits with Pasco County to open a new restaurant in Wesley Chapel, bringing the beloved brand back to the Tampa Bay region after years of anticipation.
According to permit documents, the new location will occupy the former Aussie Grill building at 25340 Sierra Center Boulevard, near State Road 54 and Wesley Chapel Boulevard. The filing outlines renovation plans for both the interior and exterior of the space.
The renovation will maintain the existing layout while implementing significant updates throughout the facility. Plans include new paint and wall finishes, refreshed restrooms, and upgrades to the kitchen, front counter, lobby, and dining area. The exterior will receive fresh paint to align with Whataburger's distinctive orange-and-white branding.
This development follows Whataburger's announcement in August 2024 about its planned expansion into the Tampa market. The company celebrated that announcement by bringing its food truck to Lykes Gaslight Square Park in downtown Tampa, where they distributed free Patty Melts to eager fans. Whataburger executives, including CEO Ed Nelson, EVP and COO Debbie Stroud, and EVP and CAO Alexander Ivannikov, were present to share the news with the community.
The burger chain first revealed its intentions to return to Florida during the 2024 event, with company leadership stating that new locations would open in 2026. Construction timelines for the Wesley Chapel location suggest it could open as early as 2026, making it among the first Whataburger restaurants to debut in the region.
Founded in 1950 when Harmon Dobson served the first customer from a small storefront in Corpus Christi, Texas, Whataburger has grown into a regional powerhouse. The company now operates more than 1,040 locations across 16 states, generating annual systemwide revenue exceeding $4 billion. The chain has built its reputation on made-to-order burgers, 24-hour service at many locations, and what the company calls "extraordinary hospitality."
Whataburger's expansion strategy emphasizes maintaining its authentic Texas roots while creating meaningful connections in new communities. The company has stated that its Tampa Bay operations will uphold the same commitment to quality ingredients, friendly service, and community involvement that has defined the brand for over seven decades.
The burger chain has earned recognition beyond its food offerings, including being named one of QSR Magazine's Best Brands to Work For in 2023 and receiving multiple Top Workplaces awards. The company refers to its employees as "Family Members" and continues to hire for positions across its growing footprint.
While fans await the Wesley Chapel opening, they can access Whataburger through the company's mobile app for advance ordering. The brand's signature sauces, including its famous Fancy and Spicy Ketchup, along with branded merchandise, are available through WhataStore.com and in select grocery stores nationwide.
The Wesley Chapel location represents a significant milestone for Whataburger's Florida expansion plans, with additional Tampa Bay area locations expected to be announced this year. The company has indicated that grand opening celebrations will reflect the bold flavors and community spirit that have made Whataburger a cultural icon across the South.
