The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) has arrested the driver accused of a fatal hit-and-run crash that killed an 82-year-old man after leaving the scene.
On July 26 at 12:26 a.m., HCSO received a call about a vehicle-versus-pedestrian crash at the intersection of Bruce B. Downs Boulevard and North 43rd Street.
When deputies arrived, they found Francisco Lugo, 82, unresponsive. Deputies said they provided lifesaving measures until Hillsborough County Fire Rescue arrived and pronounced Lugo deceased.
Detectives determined Lugo was crossing the intersection with his walker when he was struck by a dark-colored Kia Sorento traveling northbound. According to HCSO, the driver did not stop to render aid or report the crash and left the scene.
HCSO detectives identified Daniella Grant, 34, as the suspected driver. Investigators obtained a warrant and charged Grant with leaving the scene of a crash involving death.
“Leaving the scene after taking someone’s life isn’t an accident, it’s a choice, and it’s a crime,” Sheriff Chad Chronister said in a press release. “Our detectives worked tirelessly to track down the person responsible, and this arrest makes it clear: if you break the law and endanger this community, we will find you and hold you accountable. We hope this arrest brings Mr. Lugo’s family some measure of justice as they grieve this devastating loss.”
Grant turned herself in on July 30 at the Orient Road Jail.
The investigation remains active. HCSO said additional information will be released as it becomes available.
