ZooTampa at Lowry Park is celebrating a baby boom after welcoming 54 animal births since the start of the year, including three new arrivals in May.
On May 18, two female impala calves were born in the Africa habitat. The calves, named Kendall and Lanya, were born just hours apart, with Kendall arriving in the early morning and Lanya following around noon.
Both calves weighed 10 pounds at birth and are nursing successfully, according to a ZooTampa news release. The births marked the first time the zoo has had two impala calves born on the same day.
Later in May, ZooTampa welcomed a southern white rhino calf named Malaika on May 28. Malaika weighed between 80 and 100 pounds at birth.
The animal care team described Malaika as timid and said she prefers staying close to her mother as she adjusts to her new surroundings. Malaika is the 11th southern white rhino born at ZooTampa.
ZooTampa is home to more than 1,300 animals representing 300 species, including many species listed as threatened or endangered in the wild.
