The City of Tampa and members of the Guida family have announced the start of the restoration process for West Tampa’s historic George Guida Sr. House, located on Renfrew Street.
The Guida House has served as a symbol of West Tampa’s history since its completion in 1952. The $3.9 million restoration project will preserve the architectural features that helped earn the home a spot on the National Register of Historic Places while transforming the property into a community center for the neighborhood.
Civic leader George Guida Sr., also known as “Mr. West Tampa,” built the home through his own construction company. The residence became known throughout the community for its unique architecture and hosted numerous gatherings, celebrations and civic events over the years.
The City of Tampa said the restoration will preserve several cherished features of the home, including the original fireplace, tilework, cabinetry, indoor mural, outdoor chimney mural depicting a ship at sea and the heart-shaped driveway.
“The George Guida Sr. House tells the story of a family whose vision and generosity helped shape West Tampa into the vibrant community it is today,” Mayor Jane Castor said in a press release. “The restoration of his home honors the Guida family’s lasting contributions to West Tampa, and we’re proud to breathe new life into this treasured home so it can once again serve as a place that brings the community together.”
The first floor will be converted into a community gathering space featuring multi-functional rooms and historic displays. The outdoor patio will also be restored to accommodate larger gatherings and events.
The home is currently in the exploratory restoration phase. City staff said they are working closely with preservation experts and consulting George Guida Sr.’s original hand-drawn renderings to guide the project.
