The Florida State Fair, one of Tampa Bay's most anticipated annual events, has been nominated as one of the best state fairs in America by USA Today's 10Best Awards. The recognition puts Florida's official state fair in competition with 19 other top fairs across the nation, with public voting determining the final rankings.

What began as a modest gathering in South Florida in 1904 has evolved into a world-class attraction that draws visitors from across the globe. The fair achieved its official status in 1975 when Florida lawmakers designated it as the state's official fair. After moving through various Tampa locations—from the old Tampa Bay Hotel area to near Tampa Stadium—the fair found its permanent home at the Florida State Fairgrounds at 4800 U.S. Highway 301 North in the mid-1970s.

From its humble beginnings with just one building, the fair has expanded across acres of fairgrounds, transforming into a massive celebration that captures the essence of the Sunshine State.

The USA Today panel praised the fair for its exceptional blend of food, music, art, and community spirit. The event has become famous for its creative and sometimes outrageous food offerings. Visitors can indulge in everything from deep-fried strawberry shortcake to alligator tacos, with vendors constantly pushing the boundaries of fair food innovation.

Beyond the culinary adventures, the fair delivers non-stop entertainment. The massive Kraken ride provides heart-pounding excitement for thrill-seekers, while live music performances feature both local and national acts. Circus performances dazzle audiences of all ages, cooking demonstrations showcase culinary skills, and agricultural showcases and livestock competitions honor Florida's farming heritage.

The fair has exploded on TikTok, with viral videos showcasing its wild food creations and exhilarating rides. This social media presence has attracted a younger demographic, cementing the fair's status as a must-visit winter destination.

The Florida State Fair strategically takes place during Tampa's busiest tourist season, coinciding with the famous Gasparilla celebration and peak strawberry season. This timing helps draw massive crowds during its two-week run, making it one of the region's biggest economic drivers.

Voting for the USA Today 10Best Awards is open daily through Monday, July 28, 2025, at noon Eastern time. Winners will be announced on Wednesday, August 6, 2025. Floridians and fair enthusiasts nationwide can cast their votes to help the Florida State Fair claim the top spot.

The 2026 Florida State Fair will return from February 5-16, promising another spectacular celebration. While the full schedule and menu won't be released until fall 2025, organizers promise new food options that blend local favorites with popular treats from across the country.

This national nomination validates what Tampa Bay locals have long known: the Florida State Fair is more than just a regional event—it's a world-class celebration that showcases the best of Florida culture, cuisine, and community. The fair's evolution from a small gathering to an internationally recognized event reflects Tampa's growth as a major destination city.

Whether you're drawn by the gravity-defying rides, the creative culinary offerings, or the vibrant community atmosphere, the Florida State Fair continues to deliver an unforgettable experience that captures the spirit of the Sunshine State.
